Last week I noticed a piece of news that proves once again the lunatics have taken control of the asylum. It appears that certain students and faculty at the University of Minnesota want campus crime alerts to stop using racial descriptions.
In fact, the University president and Vice President of University Services received a letter from a coalition of members of the African American and African Studies department, Black Faculty and Staff Association, Black Graduate and Professional Student Association, Black Men’s Forum, the Black Student Union, and the Huntley House for African American Males. And in case you might be now wondering, no, I didn’t make any of this up.
Can we just pause quickly and reflect on what would happen if one tried to start a White American and White Studies department, White Faculty and Staff Association, White Graduate and Professional Student Association, White Men’s Forum, White Student Union, and a House for White Males at a university today?
(Editor’s note: We don’t need to imagine. It happened last year. There was… disquiet.)
The idea of a White Studies department is clearly silly and racist, yet for a vast number of people the idea of a Black Studies department isn’t. I hate to break it to those folks, but a Black Studies department is just as divisive, separatist, and yes, racist, as a White Studies department would be.
Moving on. The letter stated that these racial separatists “unanimously agree that campus safety should be of the UMPD’s utmost importance; however, efforts to reduce crime should never be at the expense of our Black men, or any specific group of people likely to be targeted. In addition to causing Black men to feel unsafe and distrusted, racial profiling is proven to inflict negative psychological effects on its victims.” Got that, Minnesota students? A black male student’s “right” not to be offended trumps your right to be safe and secure and to know what a person who committed a crime on campus looks like.
Let’s have a round of applause for Progress, ladies and gentlemen.

If you haven’t read Phyllis Schlafly’s sobering report on immigration, you really should. Hopefully it will put to rest the nonsense I’ve heard from some of my so-called conservative friends in support of immigration “reform”. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: doing anything to give the vast numbers of illegal immigrants here U.S. citizenship, or to increase the numbers of immigrants in this country, illegal or otherwise, is culturally and, for conservatives, politically suicidal.
Schafly’s report clearly demonstrates recent immigrants’ preference for leftist politics:
The 2008 National Annenberg Election Survey found that 62 percent of immigrants prefer a single, government-run health-care system. The 2010 Cooperative Congressional Election Study found that 69 percent of immigrants support Obamacare. Pew also found that 53 percent of Hispanics have a negative view of capitalism, the highest of any group surveyed. This is even higher than the 47 percent among self-identified supporters of Occupy Wall Street [emphasis added].
The Pew Research Center has also found that 75 percent of Hispanics prefer a “bigger government providing more services,” and only 19 percent prefer a smaller government. Pew also reported that 55 percent of Asians prefer “bigger government providing more services,” and only 36 percent prefer a smaller government. So it’s no surprise that in 2012, 71 percent of Hispanics and 73 percent of Asians voted for Obama.
Even Republican emphasis on patriotism and national sovereignty is likely to alienate many immigrants. A Harris poll found that 81 percent of native-born Americans believe our schools should teach students to be proud of being American, compared with only 50 percent of immigrants who had become naturalized U.S. citizens. Only 37 percent of naturalized citizens (compared with 67 percent of native-born citizens) think our Constitution is a higher legal authority than international law.
This should be enough to give any pro-immigration “reform” Republican pause, and is more evidence that those in the GOP who believe Hispanics are the future of the party are delusional.
Now, some of you out there are no doubt grinding your teeth as you read this, muttering under your breath, “but ‘Murica was built by immigrants, dang it”. Whilst America has certainly had her fair share of immigrants, and they have certainly had their fair share of influence on our daily lives, she is absolutely not a country built by them. She is a country built by settlers – largely of the white, Anglo-Saxon protestant variety –and despite successive waves of immigrants she has so far managed – to an extent anyway (the 1960s didn’t help much) – to keep the character her colonial founders imparted on her.
That character is in fact the British character. As Russell Kirk notes in his essay, “The Fraud of Multiculturalism”, “America’s higher culture, and the American civil social order, are derived from institutions and concepts that arose to the east of the Atlantic Ocean. Americans are part of a great continuity and essence.” Kirk continues, “America and Britain and their cultural dependencies share a common religious heritage, a common history in large part, a common pattern of law and politics, and a common body of great literature.”
Later on in the same essay, Kirk quotes Dr. Louis B. Wright when the latter was director of the Folger Shakespeare Library:
Modern America is so polyglot, and social historians have devoted so much attention in recent years to analyzing and describing the multifarious European, Asiatic, and African influences in the development of American life that we are now in danger of underestimating and even forgetting the oldest, the most persistent, and the most vigorous strain in our cultural inheritance. Great Britain’s influence is still so strong that it subtly determines qualities of mind and character in Americans who cannot claim a drop of Anglo-Saxon blood.
As a result of the cultural degeneration that has plagued America over the past four decades most Americans, including many who claim to be conservative, underestimate that cultural inheritance, if they haven’t forgotten it outright. It is that inheritance, and the influence it has hitherto managed to have on newcomers to this country, that risks being lost forever should we as a society acquiesce to the demands of the multiculturalist cheerleaders.
Schlafly notes, as I have elsewhere, that the new wave of immigration is unlike any other that has come before. It is differentiated not just by its sympathy towards leftist politics, but by its staggering numbers, its relative ethno-linguistic homogeneity in the case of Hispanic immigrants, and perhaps most importantly, its arrival in an atmosphere that is largely supportive of multiculturalism, with a host population that has largely forgotten its own cultural heritage and roots.
Immigrants have had, and will continue to play, an important part in the history of America, but we cannot let liberal sympathies or lust for electoral success blind us to the unique nature of current immigration to America and the very real threat it poses to our cultural and political way of life.
