Social media monitoring platform Yatterbox has today released information showing that British politicians recorded a total of 921,731 tweets over the course of 2013.

The top single tweeter was Liberal Democrat President Tim Farron MP , who tweeted an astonishing 17,421 times in 2013. What did David Cameron once say about too many tweets? Hmmmm?

Farron’s obsession means that he is sending approximately one tweet every 20 minutes throughout the year, assuming six hours of sleep per day.

Top of the pile for Labour was Stella Creasy MP (Walthamstow) with 12,739 tweets, while Michael Fabricant MP (Lichfield) was the most vocal Conservative politician on Twitter with 12,160.

The two biggest events in 2013 were the Budget and Autumn Statement,  with the latter just beating the former to top spot with 5,317 tweets from MPs.

Taking MPs alone (excluding the devolved bodies), 2013 volumes are up 28 per cent on the previous year and are a massive 238 per cent higher than the number of tweets seen in 2011.

Looking at the top 10 tweeting MPs, Labour is the most represented party with four MPs whilst Michael Fabricant is the only Conservative to make the list.
